What Does Not Work in China (Important!)

Know which major apps are blocked on local networks and which China-first alternatives to use instead.

Local networks block many global apps
China-first alternatives are fast and reliable
Roaming or travel eSIMs can restore access

Quick answer

On local Wi-Fi or a local SIM, many global services are blocked, so use China-first alternatives or rely on overseas roaming/eSIM for access.

Navigation and search

Google Search is blocked on local networks, but Bing (cn.bing.com) is accessible and works well in English.

Google Maps is unreliable in China due to outdated data and GPS offsets. Amap (Gaode) is the local standard with real-time traffic, accurate subway exits, and detailed indoor maps.

  • Google Search → Bing
  • Google Maps → Amap (Gaode)

Communication and social media

Gmail and other Google Workspace services are blocked on local networks. Outlook/Hotmail is usually accessible and is the easiest fallback for email.

Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, and other encrypted messaging apps are blocked. WeChat is the default in China and is essential for messaging and everyday tasks.

  • Gmail → Outlook/Hotmail
  • WhatsApp/Facebook/Telegram → WeChat

Entertainment and AI

YouTube does not work on local networks. For video, use Youku, iQIYI, or Tencent Video.

ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are restricted. Qwen.ai and Doubao are the most practical local alternatives, with strong Chinese and English support.

  • YouTube → Youku / iQIYI / Tencent Video
  • ChatGPT/Gemini/Claude → Qwen.ai / Doubao
