How to Register WeChat Pay as a Foreigner

Foreign visitors can use WeChat Pay by linking an international credit or debit card. Follow these steps to register, verify, and pay in China.

Quick tips

  • Transactions of 200 RMB or less are usually fee-free.
  • Some features like Red Packets still require a Chinese bank account.
  • Set up Alipay as a backup payment option.

Download and register WeChat

Start with the basics: install WeChat and register with your international phone number.

  1. Download WeChat from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Register using your international mobile number.
  3. Complete the security verification prompts.

Verify identity and link a card

Open WeChat and go to Me > Services > Wallet to access WeChat Pay.

If you do not see Services, enable WeChat Pay in Settings > General > Tools.

  1. Tap Cards, then Add a Bank Card.
  2. Enter passport or permanent resident ID details and upload the requested photos.
  3. Add your Visa, Mastercard, or JCB card details.
  4. Confirm with the OTP sent by your bank.

Use WeChat Pay in China

WeChat Pay works for everyday purchases at shops, restaurants, and taxis.

  • Tap + > Scan to scan a merchant QR code
  • Use Money to show your QR code for merchants to scan
  • Transactions over 200 RMB may incur a 3% fee
  • Typical limits: 6,000 RMB per transaction, 50,000 RMB monthly, 60,000 RMB annually

Important tips

Linking an international card allows merchant payments, but some features remain restricted without a Chinese bank account.

  • Cannot send Red Packets or transfer money to individuals
  • Cannot top up WeChat Balance with a foreign card
  • Carry a backup payment method just in case
